A New Realm

There are some things in this world that make you stop and wonder at the beauty of it. That pause that overwhelms your whole being for that split second is quite difficult to put into words.

Today, I watched as one of the greatest miracles of God's creation played out in front of my eyes. It lasted just about five seconds at the most, but it was amazing. Kinda funky how first times always render the situation better than anything else at the moment.

I was waiting and hoping to witness the birth of a piglet. I kept hanging around the two very pregnant sows as I did some piggy work. I missed four births, because they came out so fast that I kept coming in time only to see them wet and shaky, trying to crawl, umbilical cord still attached. I was rather disappointed, because after I had finished all my work, I still hadn't seen the process of a piglet being birthed. So in a final attempt to witness something I desired very much to see, I breathed a short prayer and stuck around the sows for another two minutes or so.

Suddenly, I saw a white snout at the opening of the birth canal. A little whitish-pink head followed, then legs; then the body - in no time, a piglet was lying on the floor. He was very wet, and had a rather dazed look about him. I suppose anyone would be, if they were suddenly thrown out into a strange new realm that had every sign of hostility to anything small and fragile, after dwelling in a safe and warm and dark bubble for a long period of time.

But there he was, writhing in fluid, uncertain just about everything, with only instinct as his survival tool.

As I said, it was short, but amazing.

Quite amazing indeed.
